The options range from single-tenant build-to-suit point of presence at your location to multiple points of presence across geographically diverse areas with a combination of single-tenant build-to-suit and multi-tenant leases.
How long will it take to deploy my equipment and have an operational edge point of presence?
Within our existing network of owned EdgePresence locations, your equipment will be installed and operational within two (2) weeks based upon availability. Additionally a 2 to 4 week time is required to add incremental capacity. Should new locations be required the lead time to installation and operation is 6 to 8 weeks. We will work with you to determine your needs and build a custom deployment plan and provide an estimate of your timeline.
What is the demand for EdgePresence edge data centers?
The mobile cellular tower and onsite edge computing point of presence market began in the second half of 2018 following the completion of the 5G standards. To date, edge computing presents organizations with increased business opportunities, with many benefits to be realized. The initial rollouts of 5G are an enabler of the architecture of edge computing needs and mobile cellular towers are likely to be the primary new edge point of presence locations over the next three years.). Of the 100,000+ mobile cell towers in the United States, industry participants agree that 8-12K mobile cell towers (8-12%) will need edge points of presence. Additionally, according to Gartner, by 2025, 75% of data is going to be processed at the Edge.
In summary, edge technology is a viable solution to many business issues of today such as latency, increased data volumes, high costs of data transport, latency and others.
Why would I need an edge point of presence? I just finished moving to the Cloud.
Edge computing and micro edge data centers augment the cloud computing architecture. Edge computing and colocation at the edge in our micro data centers support emerging trends such as the roll out of 5G and move to software defined networking (SDN); over-the-top media replacing broadcast; the growth of Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and autonomous vehicles; greater adoption of augmented or virtual reality (and other video processing); and the containerization of software and move to microservices, amongst other drivers. What are the Edge use cases?
Edge computing use cases are initially likely to focus on fiber network traffic / backhaul reduction (e.g., streaming duplicate content streams, 5G traffic / network management) or latency reduction / elimination (e.g., interactive content such as augmented reality, autonomous vehicles). Some Edge use cases already exist (e.g., Content Delivery Networks) however others are nascent (e.g., autonomous vehicles, augmented reality), and many more are yet to be developed.
Today, many leading cloud and content companies already deploy edge infrastructure within the networks of ISPs, carriers, or private networks. For example, streaming services providers have spent years deploying cache devices into more than 1,000+ points of presence to support the ultra-fast and low cost delivery of video content. Each of these cache devices typically requires 2U, a maximum of 500W, and is capable of storing 100+ terabytes (TB) of data or the equivalent of 20,000+ 1080P resolution movies.
Internet Service Providers and mobile network operators have seen significant benefits from reduced cross network traffic, in-network efficiency, lower capital investments,lower operating costs, and quality of service improvements from these deployments. Continued improvements in storage and compute density as well as power efficiency will allow these edge devices to create an ever increasing efficient footprint.
